Since being with CleanClimate I have discovered much more about the impact of man on his environment. Climate Change and impact is a learning process. Despite the fact that I studied environmental management in my masters, I find I am still on the path of discovery. This is not dissimilar to what we see happening in the world today. The general public is having a rude awakening. Just like we found out about the impact of mercury in our water systems; like we came to a conclusion about smoking; and like we realised that CFC’s were creating Ozone holes, the reality of CO2 and other Green House gases is becoming widely know. The following is Malsows hierarchy of knowledge. Most people know Maslow for his hierarchy of needs, but in the case of awakening (global consciousness) I find this very demonstrative:

As we move out of the bliss of ignorance we start to become aware that we need to make some radical changes to the way we generate electricity, use land, and power air and sea transport. Our conservation of resources is a prime concern. In some countries we have moved to correct this through recycling (Conscious Incompetence). In this stage we want to know more; understand what we can do to improve our carbon footprint.
At a higher level of knowledge (Conscious Competence) we are thinking it through and making decisions like the purchase of green energy; influencing governments on support of the environment and being vocal even in our day-to-day conversations.
In the final chapter of this evolution decisions are made based on all the rational thought that we used to have to have to make a decision. ie will I walk or use the car, do I purchase low energy or incandescent light bulbs…. etc. The new decision making is made naturally, as if it exists as part of our autonomic system like breathing and walking.
