I was at One degree 15 marina on the weekend, and caught a good look at the a boat called “Earthrace”. From a distance is looked a little like a space ship on water. I was delighted to find that this boat is in fact a prime example of the achievements of the emerging eco-technology industry. The Earthrace team aims to set a record by circumnavigating the globe faster than any other boat before it. And, it will do this in an eco friendly hi-tech design. Earthrace is fuelled by biodiesel, a fuel produced from renewable crops such as canola. It has a plethora of leading edge technology; including engines, composites, hull design and motors. To beat the record it needs to complete the journey in just 65 days. It will mark the first time in history that an official UIM Powerboat record will be held by a vessel using renewable fuel.
The current record was set by British boat "Cable & Wireless" in 1998, when the diesel-powered craft covered the 24,382 nautical miles in just under 75 days.
